The terms **“rising water levels”** and **“major flooding event”** are often associated with coastal regions—and for good reason. With the increasing frequency of large storms and hurricanes, coastlines frequently make front-page news. However, while much attention is given to rising flood risks in states like Florida, Louisiana, and Texas, a larger issue is being overlooked. Flood risk isn’t just tied to major hurricanes. Rising water levels in rivers, creeks, and lakes are impacting both coastal and inland communities.

In October 2024, officials in Pasco County, FL, referred to rising river levels as a [‘200-year flood event’.](https://www.wusf.org/weather/2024-10-11/pasco-county-officials-rising-rivers-200-year-flood-event-evacuations-shelters) With three rivers in major flood stage and a fourth expected to reach the same level, officials urged residents near lakes, retention ponds, and low-lying areas to remain on high alert.

In December 2024, Ridgewood, NJ—located approximately 20 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan—received long-awaited [news](https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/bergen/ridgewood/2024/12/17/us-army-corps-of-engineers-will-study-ridgewoods-flooding-issue/76957350007/): the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had finally been authorized to study the village’s flooding patterns. Over the past few years, the community has faced repeated flooding along the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook and Saddle Rivers. In just the last four months of 2024, the area experienced three significant flooding events.

In February 2025, [*CNN*](https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/17/us/deadly-winter-storm-eastern-us/index.html) reported multi-state flooding caused by rising river levels. A coast-to-coast winter storm had dangerously raised water levels in Kentucky, the Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic region, and West Virginia.

According to [*Mississippi Today*](https://mississippitoday.org/2025/03/10/mississippi-river-mayors-lobby-for-more-funding-for-flooding/), mayors of towns and cities along the Mississippi River are now lobbying for increased government funding for flood mitigation after years of worsening floods.
